100+ Years of the Cleveland Bird Calendar cd
-
I recently completed cd and cd sleeve designs for the Kirtland Bird Club’s soon-to-be-released compilation of 100 plus years of the Cleveland Bird Calendar in PDF form. Pretty extraordinary project and monumental for an Ohio bird journal. Many of Ohio’s most significant records come from the region, and readers will have the history of Cleveland birding on-tap at any time for easy reference. Detailed seasonal comments and distribution are thoroughly covered throughout, and photos and articles appear widely in the issues.
Readers can search all 390+ issues at one time using Adobe Reader and the Master Index on the cd. You can search by species, birding locations in the 7-county region covered by The Cleveland Bird Calendar, or search any text that you wish.
Look for the cd to be available relatively soon…

FESTIVAL OF THE BIRDS at Presque Isle, PA
-
I’ll be speaking and guiding tours at the 2011 Festival of the Birds that will be held May 6, 7 and 8 at Presque Isle State Park and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Pennsylvania. Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day and enjoy the height of spring bird migration at Presque Isle, a natural concentration point along the Atlantic flyway where 320 species of birds have been recorded.
Upwards of 20 species of warblers can be found, plus shorebirds, gulls, waterfowl, migrant raptors and more. Hosted by Presque Isle Audubon, one of the greatest groups I’ve met and worked with.
Check out Festival of the Birds by clicking HERE
-
The following is the trailer for the award winning film, “Wings, Sand and Song: Presque Isle’s Habitats” created by Moonfire Film Productions. The film journeys through the unique habitats of Presque Isle during all four seasons to view some of the most intimate moments of bird life.

AUG, SEPT, OCT LOCAL PATCH TOURS: 165 species
-
I finally tallied the number of species recorded on this year’s late summer/fall Local Patch trips, from August and September through Sunday October 3rd 2010. 165 species total were seen/heard, with highlights of:
- Glossy Ibis at Sandy Ridge
- multiple stunning looks at Buff-breasted and Baird’s Sandpipers; 21 species of shorebirds total, including Red-necked Phalarope and Willet
- several Yellow-bellied Flycatchers
- Black-bellied Whistling-Duck chased after our Conneaut tour
- several fantastic studies of Philadelphia Vireos
- a stellar Sedge Wren at Wake Robin trail
- incredible numbers of Swainson’s and Gray-cheeked Thrushes
- 23 species of warblers including Orange-crowned, and hoardes of Blackpoll, Wilson’s, and Magnolia Warblers plus great views of Tennessee, Bay-breasted, Blackburnian, and Chestnut-sided among others
- 12 species of sparrows including stunning LE CONTE’S and NELSON’S Sparrows on October 3rd, plus Henslow’s and Lincoln’s
September alone was one of the single best months of solid birding I’ve ever experienced in Ohio. The waves of warblers were just mind-boggling, with days of over 100 Blackpolls, 100 Wilson’s, 100 Magnolias…other days with dozens upon dozens of thrushes, kinglets, vireos… it was one for the books…

Rio Grande Birding Festival
As the 2010 artist for the event, I will be speaking and guiding day trips at the Rio Grande Birding Festival in south Texas, November 10th – 14th, 2010. This region is a must-see for birders. The specialty birdlife is unreal: Green Jay, Plain Chachalaca, Altamira Oriole, Crested Caracara, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Ringed Kingfisher, Aplomado Falcon… and then some. The festival offers brilliant day trips, fantastic vendors, and a great mix of folks.
Check out the list of leaders, speakers, vendors,
field trips, seminars, and other events:

Local Patch Birding booth at OOS Conference, October
Gabe and I will be operating a Local Patch Birding booth at the Ohio Ornithological Society’s conference in October in Eastlake. In between getting out into the field for the incredible line up of field trips, come visit us for a chance to win a free birding trip: we’ll have a BIRD ID contest, featuring 10 or 20 photos, up on a board at our booth. They could be tricky photos…are you up for the challenge?
Sixth Annual Conference of the Ohio Ornithological Society, to be held the weekend of October 8 through 10, 2010. There’s a fantastic lineup of speakers, workshops and field trips, including a Lake Erie Pelagic Tour. Key species that will be targeted include Le Conte’s Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, jaegers, Sabine’s Gull, and more…

Local Patch Birding Tours: online pay
We are now offering the opportunity to pre-pay for trips via PAYPAL, should you desire to pay via a credit card. This is merely an additional option. We will always continue to accept cash and checks as in-person payment at the beginning of trips and tours.
To use the PAYPAL option: You will see a “Number of Participants” selection and “Pay Now” button below each tour description. Here you can choose the appropriate number of registrations (1 adult, etc.). When you click “Pay Now” you will be taken to the PayPal homepage. You must have a PayPal account to process the transaction. You can easily and safely create an account through PayPal (it is a free service). Enter your information. PayPal processes your payment, and routes the successful transaction to our Local Patch PayPal account.
Important: While this service allows you to pay for a trip online, we ask that you immediately email or call us to confirm your registration for the specific tour of your choice that you’ve paid for. Ex: “Please register me for the August 28th shorebirding tour to Pipe Creek. I have just successfully paid for the trip online with PayPal.”
We hope that this new service allows for participants to enjoy a further ease of registering/paying for a trip. If at any time you find that this service (paying online via PayPal) is not favorable, or if you encounter a problem, please let us know immediately.
- cheers, Jen
